SAFETY4SEA: What does ‘wellness’ mean to you? What do you do in your everyday life to embrace wellness?
Laurent Emmanuel Migeon: For me, wellness means both a safe mind and a healthy body. It ensures I can balance my professional life with my personal life as my family is essential; a happy personal life benefits my professional development and vice versa.
S4S: What are the two things to do that can make you feel happy after a challenging day?
L.E.M.: I spend time with my grandson in our family pool, naturally treated with a BIO-UV group system. I also enjoy nature, taking care of my garden, and growing my vegetables. Alternatively, I will drink a good glass of wine since I am a connoisseur and I have a deep knowledge of red wines with a background of oenologist.
S4S: What do you do to keep balance between your personal and business life?
L.E.M.: I keep the two environments separate
S4S: In the last five years, what new belief, behavior, or habit has most improved your personal life?
L.E.M.: Being an agricultural engineer and having spent some time working in the environmental, life sciences, and agrifood sectors, I have always been very keen to preserve natural resources and protect life on earth. Joining BIO-UV Group 5 years ago, I realized more than before how important water is as a finite resource and have made significant changes to reduce water consumption in an effort to preserve life on earth. There is no better example of this than the reasoning behind the development of the BW Convention and the introduction ballast water treatment technologies like our BIO-SEA BWTS/ Both are there simply to prevent invasive species from proliferating around the globe.
S4S: What would you like to change in the current maritime landscape with regards to wellbeing?
L.E.M.: The enforcement of the BW Convention to ensure ballast water treatment systems are properly installed and used correctly to prevent invasive species from impacting ocean biodiversity and spreading diseases, such as cholera. As an industry, we also need to make sure systems are maintained and crews are trained in the right way. I would also love to see more wind-powered cargo vessels like the ones we equipped recently in France to support the decarbonisation of the maritime industry. Last but not least, I think more needs to be done to prevent biofouling.
S4S: What wellness-promoting initiatives would you like to see in the workplace?
L.E.M.: We encourage sport at work and sponsor local sports clubs: basketball, football, rugby, etc. Everybody deserves to go home safely just as they arrived and work should not be detrimental to the health and welfare of our employees. We also support flexible working and home office working to promote family-work life balance.
S4S: What is the one thing that you are feeling grateful at the moment?
L.E.M.: Being in good health and shape, and working with a great team. I also enjoy the challenge of leading a dedicated and professional team.
S4S: What are your hobbies/ favorite activities?
L.E.M.: Playing golf with my children, walking and rambling in the natural environment. I also enjoy cooking and reading.
S4S: What is your personal motto?
L.E.M.: Life is cool and work is fun!
